Short & Sweets Bakery is owned and operated by Baking Duo Victoria Rivera, and Nate McKay.
In 2012 I (Victoria), who had baked for fun occasionally, picked it up as a hobby. It then became a dream, my mom and I walked through a small courtyard near my school and thought it would be the perfect spot for a little shop. I wrote all my senior essays about my “dream job”, always noting that it was an unrealistic goal.
After graduating I worked at a bakery for a small amount of time, before becoming a Cake Decorator at the grocery store for several years. I gained experience, and during that time I started Short and Sweets on FB as a side-gig. Baking from my parents house, I stayed up all hours of the night leaving behind huge messes to create cakes, then cookies later on.
Fast Forward to 2017, Nate and I were married, and I began baking from our apartment! A couple years later the company Nate was working for shut down and he was having a hard time finding a new job. I suggested him helping with my “side-gig” while I was at work, so I could take more orders, he agreed and that was that. Well that helped my little cottage bakery grow into a part of what it is today!
In 2019, we heard a spot was opening up at MY DREAM LOCATION, I did not hesitate (though my nerves were KILLING me with anticipation) to contact the owner asap. With a little know how, and a lotta struggle we were open by August! We never expected anything like what 2020 hit us with, but our community and customers kept us in business, and even helped us grow more than we thought we would in such a short period of time!
We have now been open for 4 years and are growing constantly. While it is just the two of us now, we hope to one day have a large shop with lots of employees to better serve the Lubbock area.
We definitely couldn’t have done any of this without our amazingly supportive family, friends, and our out-of-this-world customers.
Thank you always -Vic & Nate
